Biography

In 1982, while attending Eastern Kentucky University, Jon took an old, out-of-focus snapshot of his and used a marker to outline every shape in it. The result was a total surprise.

Jon began outlining more blurry photos until he had a substantial stack of them. He showed them to one of his art professors, who promptly told him they needed to be enlarged and painted on canvas.

Jon's first attempt at this was successful, but he soon graduated and life took him in other directions for many years.

In 2001, Jon found himself housebound for several months due to back surgery. He found the time to pick up where he left off in college, this time with the help of a computer.

All of the digital portraits shown here started with a photograph. The final product, however, has none of the original shot left. Each line is manually inserted, taking from 10 to 20 hours to complete a portrait. Each shape is made up of one solid color, which was sampled from the original photo.

The best way to display these portraits, is in large format, hung in a location allowing viewers to see them from across the room. From a distance, they appear photo-realistic, but as the viewer approaches, the image becomes more abstract, taking the work in a different artistic direction.
